On March 18,2009 President Matthew asked if I would like to attend Vice President's Biden Town Hall Meeting in St Cloud, MN on March 19, 2009. At first I thought someone was playing a trick on me. Especially, after I noticed that the meeting was scheduled for the next day. I immediately gathered my composure and started to think of how I could make this happen. I made several contacts with Deputy Director Earl X. Wright to get permission to attend. Next I started trying to see if I could catch a flight out on March 18, 2009. I found the last flight that was scheduled to depart Spokane at 3pm. I booked it and went home to get ready to go. During all this confusion I had giving permission for IT at Headquarters earlier to deactivate my old Blackberry and to activate the new one that had arrived. So then I was traveling without any wireless communication.
At the Town Hall meeting I did get the opportunity to meet and shake hands with the Vice President. What an honor. The Vice President spoke for about an hour and a half. In attendance was former Vice President Walter Mondale and other dignitaries. Biden's Task Force that was present were Secretaries of HUD, Education, Commerce, Health Services and Transportation. Here are some of the highlights of the Vice President's message;
Revitalize the Middle Class Workers - get them back to work
American Recovery and Re-Investment Act
People who work for a strong America will benefit when America bounces back
Equal pay for women
Electronic Health care records
Explanation of what the phrase "Middle Class" means - citizens should be in the position to take care of their families; purchase a home; but an automobile; take care of aging parents and live comfortable. This is what he wants for the citizens of this country. If you work hard; play by the rules; patriotic to this country; there is nothing that you can not accomplish.
I was honored that President Matthew asked me to attend this event and to represent NABCJ. I believe that our organization is headed in the right direction. Thanks to WA DOC for affording me the time to make this happen.
